West Bengal is a state in the eastern region of India and is the nation's fourth-most populous. The state capital is Kolkata. The state encompasses two broad natural regions: the Gangetic Plain in the south and the sub-Himalayan and Himalayan area in the north. Tourism in West Bengal is maintained by WBTDCL, a state government-owned enterprise.

West Bengal, located on the eastern bottleneck of India stretching from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south, presents some marvelous landscape features and natural scenic beauty. Some of India's most preferred travel destinations like; the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region in the northern extreme of the state, the highest peak of the state Sandakphu (3,636 m or 11,929 ft), and the Sundarbans mangrove forests in the extreme south.

There are many hill stations in North West Bengal, of which Darjeeling is world-famous. Others are Kurseong, Kalimpong, Rimbick, Lava and Loleygaon, Mirik and Sandakfu. Barramundi is also famous among tourists, it's situated in the Southern Part of West Bengal. West Bengal has 3.26% of its geographical area under protected areas comprising 15 wildlife sanctuaries and 5 national parks — Sundarbans National Park, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Gorumara National Park, Neora Valley National Park, Singalila National Park, and Jaldapara National Park. West Bengal also has wildlife sanctuaries and bird sanctuaries like Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary and Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary.

1. Kolkata - City of Joy

Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), the capital city of West Bengal, is a city of every traveller’s dream. With architectural splendour, rich art galleries, vibrant culture and historical significance, Kolkata is undeniably one of the most important cities of the country with a significant past and culture, religious importance, along with a rich art and literary history. There are many stories behind the name Calcutta/Kolkata. According to some, the city was named as Kalikata, which was created by combining the three village names. However, as per other researchers, the name was given owing to its geographical location. As the city is situated at the river side, it is named Kolikata with Kol referring to the depressions on the river banks. The most popularly believed reason behind the name Kolkata is after the name of Hindu Goddess Kali which later became Calcutta. However, in 2001, the city was renamed as Kolkata.

Three villages namely Kalikata, Gobindapur and Sutanuti together constitute the city of Kolkata, which is located at the banks of River Hooghly. During 13th century, trade started flourishing in the city; Saptagram is earliest town known to have established trade relations with foreign lands.

2. Darjeeling

For its significance as a popular tourist spot, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The ride in the toy train of Himalayan Railways Station is both adventurous as well relaxing in nature. ... No wonder it tops the list of the best tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

One of the most popular places to visit in Darjeeling, DHR is approximately a 2 feet narrow gauge train track that covers the distance between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. This 88-km long railway track is best known for its toy train which gushes amid the misty hillside and offers absolutely gorgeous views of the valley. 

The most famous mountain peak in Darjeeling, Tiger Hill is best known for its trekking routes and panoramic views of Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga. One needs to walk or drive through the oldest tea plantations, in order to reach Tiger Hill. It is recommended to witness the first rays of the sun on Mt. Everest. Don’t miss capturing it in your camera as well because it will be a majestically rich experience. 

If we have led you into believing that Darjeeling is purely a touristy place, that is far from the truth. Thanks to the position of Darjeeling in Himalayan foothills, there are a number of excellent trekking trails you can find around the city; Sandakphu being one of the popular ones. It is a moderate-level trek that takes you through some extremely scenic landscapes until you finally reach Sandakphu at 11,929 feet.

3. Siliguri

Siliguri is one of the most important cities in terms of tourism as well as business opportunities in West Bengal. Visitors can enjoy a great trip to sightseeing places while staying in luxury resorts and hotels. 

It is famous for its tea, transport, tourism and timber, Siliguri is located about 80 kilometres from Darjeeling. ... Perched at an elevation of 2,113 feet, Siliguri is the major transit point for air, road and rail traffic to the neighbouring countries of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Located on the banks of the Mahananda River and at the Himalayan foothills, Siliguri is endowed with natural scenic beauty and attracts numerous tourists all year round. Views of the none snow-clad mountain peaks of the great Himalayan Ranges from Siliguri are not to be missed. The Kanchenjunga Stadium and the Hong Kong market are famous tourist attractions. Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, located nearby, is also a great place to visit for a safari.

4. Bankura

In the Mahabharata, Bankura was described as Suhmobhumi. The word larh or rarh was introduced after 6th century A.D. It comes from the old Austric word ráŕhá or ráŕho which means “land of red soil” 2-n ancient times "China called Ráŕh by the name of 'Láti'". 3-n Santali, lar means thread, rarh means tune and larh means snake. 4-.Perhaps the Jain and Greek scholars used this original Austric word larh to indicate this dry forest region which was very difficult. The popularity of Manasa Puja, the worship of Snake-Goddess Manasa, shows this opinion might have some relevance. According to Nilkantha, a commentator of the Mahabharata, the words suhmo [bhumi] (Sanskrit: suhma-bhūmi) and Rarh are synonymous.

Bankura has international fame for the “Bankura Horse”- a terracotta crafted horse, and for Dashabatar Tash (the historic paintings). Bankura is famous for agriculture, the huge production of 'Mango' and 'Mustard'. Tribes like Santhal, Bhumij(Sardar) and Munda reside in the Mukutmanipur region.

The top sightseeing places in Bankura are Susunia Hill, Joyrambati, Bishnupur, Jhilimili, Mukutmanipur, Gokul Chand Temple.

5. Midnapore

What we called Midnapore is in fact divided into two districts, Purba(East) and Pashchim (West).  There are many reasons that make it one of the most popular tourist places in West Bengal. Dotting its landscape are monuments, beaches, ancient temples, parks and gardens. What all this means, essentially, is that there are numerous options for tourism, sightseeing and exploration in Midnapore, West Bengal. It’s the kind of place which lets you have a good time.

The top tourist attractions in East Midnapore include its various beaches. The foremost among them is Digha Beach, which is extremely famous for beach holidays. Mandarmani is another famous place for a beach vacation, undoubtedly, among other factors, because it is located at a short distance from Kolkata (it is located at a distance of 167 km approx). After you visit Digha, you should head for Junput, which lies 40 km away. The casuarina trees lining the beach lining the beach lend it a special kind of beauty.

6. Hooghly

Hooghly is one of the most economically developed districts in West Bengal. It is the main jute cultivation, jute industry, and jute trade hub in the state. The jute mills are along the banks of the river Hooghly in Tribeni, Bhadreswar, Champdani, and Sreerampur.

The upper riparian zone of the river is called Bhagirathi while the lower riparian zone is called Hooghly. Major rivers that drain into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly include Mayurakshi, Jalangi, Ajay, Damodar, Rupnarayan, and Haldi rivers other than the Ganges. The Hooghly River Ganga is a 260 km long river. It is a distributary river of the Ganges River. Farakka Barrage a dam diverts water from the Ganges into a canal near the town of Tildanga of Murshidabad district.
